Christmas Cookies and Happy Hearts, this is How the Holiday Starts

Christmas Cookies and Happy Hearts, this is How the Holiday Starts

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year for a reason.  There are so many things to celebrate: faith, family, giving, blessings, delicious food, cozy candles (from Antique Candle Works!), the list goes on.

Regardless of what you celebrate this season, there’s one thing that everyone can share in, and that is tradition.  That being said, one of my favorite Christmas traditions is definitely the sweetest: baking Christmas cookies!

Our friend Meeghan (from Cali Girl in a Southern World) is a pro when it comes to making the most beautiful and yummy Christmas cookies.  She’s a lifestyle blogger with a passion for family, home décor, writing, and of course, cooking.  Meeghan has a collection of tons of holiday recipes, including cookie recipes that have been passed down over generations.

A favorite in Meeghan’s family are good old Sugar Cookies.  However, despite how tasty they are, it’s the time spent with loved ones making the cookies that is the best part about them.  It’s a simple tradition, but it can lead to the most cherished memories.

Here’s Meeghan’s recipe for those classic sugar cookies:

(Check out the original post here)

Ingredients for cookies

3 cups all purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon Baking Powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup salted butter (softened)

1 cup sugar

1 egg (beaten)

1 tablespoon milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Powdered sugar (for rolling out dough)

Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add egg, milk, and vanilla; beat to combine. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture until fully incorporated. Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate for about 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Sprinkle the surface where you are rolling out the dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough from the refrigerator at a time, sprinkle the rolling pin with powdered sugar, and roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thick. Cut into desired shapes. Place the shapes at least 1-inch apart on a greased cookie sheet or a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 7-9 minutes or until the cookies just begin to brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Allow cookies to cool for 3 minutes after removing them from the oven and then move to a wire rack to continue to cool completely. Serve as is or ice as desired.

Note from Meeghan: Move the dough around frequently when rolling out and cutting shapes to ensure that it is not sticking. If dough has warmed during rolling, put it back in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to re-chill before trying to roll out again.

Ingredients for royal icing

3 ounces pasteurized egg whites

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 teaspoons lemon juice

4 cups confectioner’s sugar

In a large bowl combine egg whites, vanilla, and lemon juice until frothy. Add confectioner’s sugar gradually and mix with an electric mixer on low speed until sugar is incorporated and mixture is shiny. Turn speed up until mixture forms stiff, glossy peaks. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Add food coloring of desired. Transfer icing to pastry bag or heavy duty storage bag and pipe as desired. If using a storage bag, clip corner.

Note from Meeghan: Frosting can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

I absolutely love these cookies!  They are gorgeous and look so yummy!  Whether you need a new recipe for Santa’s cookies, or just a special treat for the holidays, these cookies from Meeghan are perfect for this jolly season!

(And I couldn't help but be reminded of our sweet Vanilla!)

Giving Thanks - Linen and Basil

Giving Thanks - Linen and Basil

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and we couldn’t be more excited!  Thanksgiving is a time to be surrounded by your loved ones, enjoy a delicious feast, and reflect on your blessings throughout the year.

This year, we at Antique Candle Works have so much to be thankful for!  We’ve grown as a team, as a business, and have made so many friends along the way!

In the spirit of giving thanks, we’ve teamed up with our good friend Jen from Linen and Basil to share one of the things we are so thankful to be able to give to you: candles.  Without great friends and candles, we wouldn’t be where we are today!

Jen is a lover of Jesus and interior design from Atlanta.  She has a gorgeous home where she takes beautiful photos of her modern farmhouse décor, and our candles!

Jen also shares something else we are very thankful for this holiday.  Antique Candle Works is a Christian-based small business, and we are open about who we are as followers of Christ.  Like us, Jen’s faith is very important to her.  She couldn’t have put it better, “I think we often take for granted that we live in a country where we are free to worship whoever we choose.  For me, Christianity is a part of who I am, and I am thankful to be able to say that.”

The holiday season often brings to light what is truly important in life.  Through our candles, we want to remind people of what that is.  It may be Momma’s Kitchen that reminds you of the love of family, or Vanilla that reminds you of the sweetness of friends.  Or perhaps it’s Good Tidings, a reminder of the good news of the true meaning of Christmas.

We are so thankful for faith, family, friends (like Jen!), and the opportunity to share those happy thoughts with you through the simplest of gifts: a soy candle.

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?  We’d love to hear how you spend the holiday, and which candle most reminds you of the important things in life.

What are our Most Popular Fragrances?

What are our Most Popular Fragrances?

That is a question that many of us at Antique Candle Works are asked on, and off the clock.  We currently carry a total of 16 unique fragrances that have been carefully selected to represent our brand.  Many of our fragrances are seasonal, meaning that they are most popular during certain times of the year.  If you were to ask us what our most popular fragrance is toward the end of the year, for example, the answer would be Christmas Day.  Or, in September, it might be Autumn Leaves or Pumpkin Spice.  However, all of our scents can be enjoyed by everyone at any time of the year!

Here are our four most popular fragrances chosen by you!

  1. Momma’s Kitchen

Top notes of green apple, peach and pine needle leading to a spicy cinnamon clove and thyme with sweet balsamic spice.  This nostalgic fragrance sends you straight into your mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen.  What could be more appetizing than that?  You can almost taste that pie in the oven!

  1. Sage & Citrus

An earthy blend of lemon, lime, and sage.  This is definitely one of our most refreshing fragrances.  It is a clean, fresh scent with just enough of that citrusy sweetness to brighten up an entire room!  You might find yourself craving a glass of lemonade!

  1. Pumpkin Spice

Popular scent of seasoned pumpkin aroma with a fall spice mix that says "Welcome Home!"  Though this scent peaks during the fall season, it is a classically delicious fragrance that just makes everyone smile, no matter the time of the year!  The combination of pumpkin and spices makes me want to gather around with my family and enjoy some pie!

And our most popular fragrance is…

  1. Clean Cotton

A wonderfully crisp, clean linen scent with just a kiss of fruit.  Clean Cotton is without a doubt a favorite to be enjoyed year-round!  This clean fragrance isn’t like your typical linen scent.  The subtle sweetness brings a whole new level of freshness to this soothing scent, and it is easy to see why this is our most popular fragrance to date!

What do you think of our top four fragrances?  Are there any that surprised you?  Let us know what your favorite fragrance is on Facebook!

Antique Candle: The Old Made New

Antique Candle: The Old Made New

Every month, the Antique Candle Works team prepares for the biggest sale we have: the antique candle sale.  This month, the sale is being held online on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 8 p.m. EST.  The antique vessels used for the candles are found by Brittany or her family and friends, and it is always so interesting seeing the history held in each item.  I can only imagine someone cracking open one of the old coffee tins and making themselves a drink before work, or making bread out of an old loaf pan for supper.  It is remarkable knowing that these vintage pieces were once actually used every day, and we are making them into something new and beautiful.

While all of our antique candles are unique, there are some that stand out above the rest every month. Old Blue Ball jars are a constant attraction by followers of Antique Candle Works, and therefore we feature as many as we can in each sale.  Not only are these jars lovely, vintage additions that draw every eye to them, but the fragrances we pour into the jars fill an entire room with captivating scents.  These antique blue glass jars were once used for canning and preserving food, so when we hand pour them, I often wonder what was previously inside.  It is also fascinating to judge just how old each jar may actually be by the differences in the Ball logo.  Some may even be from the early 1900s!

Blue Ball jars are classic antique pieces that perfectly express what we are trying to do at Antique Candle Works.  They are a huge inspiration to our style and the idea of taking something old and making it new.  The jars represent the past and tradition in an exceptional way that bring something special into any home.  Just like all candles from Antique Candle Works, these Blue Ball candles are individually hand poured with love, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The next antique candle sale is Tuesday January 17, 2017 at 8 p.m. EST!

After January 17th, visit the Antique Candle Works antique candle page for the next antique candle sale date!

Contact us and share your experience with antique candles!

Have a blessed day!
