Employee Spotlight: Hannah

Tell me a little about yourself.

My name is Hannah, and I'm originally from the Atlanta, Georgia area.  I'm a Georgia Peach turned Indiana Hoosier!  Before I came here, I studied at Georgia Southern University where I majored in Multimedia Production with a focus in film and television.  My husband, Alex, and I have been married for three years, and we moved to Lafayette two years ago.

What is your job at Antique Candle Works?

I am a Digital Media Specialist.  I create photo and video content for our social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, etc.), as well as for the website and mailing list.  I also get to help the team make some candles every now and then!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to watch Netflix with my husband and find yummy Paleo dessert recipes on Pinterest. (And then bake them!)  I also love to explore new towns and places.  Whether that means a short weekend getaway or vacationing with family, it's fun to experience new things!

Where is your favorite place to grab some grub?

My husband and I are Paleo, so we mainly cook our meals at home.  But we did find this restaurant in Indy called 'Nook' that is a Paleo Influenced Diner.  They have the best brussels sprouts!

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Psalm 73:26 - "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

This verse reminds me that even though I am weak and I'll fail, God is my constant and will always be faithful and strong for me.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?

I am currently watching New Girl and I feel like I can resonate with the Jess character because she sings everything she thinks about, and I feel like I do that!  My favorite movie is probably Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley.

What is something that most people don't know about you?

Before I found my niche in photography and videography, I originally went to school to be a news anchor.  In high school, I created a small production with a weekly news show called "Hawk Talk."  The show actually kept running after I graduated!

You are happiest when...

I'm in a local coffee shop during the fall season.  I'd be most happy if that coffee shop is located in the mountains!  There's something about being surrounded by the beautiful creation and sipping a good drink that is so cozy.

What part of working at Antique Candle Works do you enjoy the most?

When I'm shooting photos and videos, I think being able to picture how I would want to see a candle come to life depending on the fragrance is so interesting and fun, especially if it's for a new fragrance or an upcoming announcement.  I love creating scenes that make you want to actually smell the candles.

I think everyone else's favorite part of my job is when there is food involved in my shoots, because that means they get to eat the spoils!

Do you have any life goals?

Yes, I have several.  I want to be a good help-mate to my husband, and if it's God's will, be a godly mother to our future kids.  In the far, far future, I also think it would be so fun to own a coffee shop in the mountains!

What have you learned from working at Antique Candle Works?

I've definitely learned how a small business is an 'all hands on deck' operation and it takes everyone doing their part or lending a helping hand to create the best candles possible.  Seeing the small business side of things and the amazing businesswoman that Brittany is is so interesting, and this whole experience has helped me learn and grow personally.

What is your favorite fragrance at Antique Candle Works?

This is a seasonal thing for me because I like to alternate with how many good scents there are!  In the fall I love Pumpkin Spice, but in the winter it's definitely a tie between Peppermint and Good Tidings.  I think overall my favorites are the cozier scents that make you want to wrap up in a warm blanket.

What is your favorite thing about Lafayette/West Lafayette?

My favorite thing is my church family at Cornerstone.  When Alex and I moved to the area, we literally moved away from all our family and lifelong friends, and the first people that welcomed us was our church.  Their welcome was heartwarming and something I'll never forget.  We have family here in Lafayette because of that.

A Day in the Life of Waylon: The Candle Pug

A Day in the Life of Waylon: The Candle Pug

There’s no doubt that there’s something special about small businesses.  Here, we are a studio family, all the candles are carefully hand poured and shipped, and we love every one of our sweet candle friends.  Antique Candle Works is unique as far as small businesses go, but we also have one thing that sets us apart from the rest.  Meet:

The Candle Pug.

Waylon starts his days at the Antique Candle Works studio with the best brew our K-Cups have to offer.  He is not a morning pug, so no puppy-talk until he’s finished his coffee.  That’s nonnegotiable.

With a much needed caffeine kick, Waylon can finally start filling our wax melter, ‘Pam’.  (The other melter is dubbed ‘Phyllis’—HA!)  Sometimes this can get a bit messy…

Once that’s done, it’s time for managerial duties.  Waylon is the overseer of the studio and not a thing gets by his watchful eye—until he falls asleep.  Besides his morning nap, Waylon takes his role as Boss Pug very seriously.

Lunch time, Waylon’s second favorite activity of the day (after going home and eating dinner).  He licks his dish clean, but can’t stop himself from begging for an extra treat from the candle makers.  Puppy-dog eyes alert!

After lunch, Waylon takes a break from the studio to do some office work with his human.  It’s a little confusing for this pug, so he mainly just watches Brittany work her magic.

Candle time!  Once the candles have been poured (which Waylon made sure of during his overseeing duties), it’s time to clean them up.  Waylon is pro-pug at making sure every candle is cleaned and labeled perfectly for our candle friends!

Waylon loves shipping you your favorite candles!  So much so that he might steal one of our hand-stamped boxes for himself and pretend to be Happy Mail!  (Adorable happy mail!)

Finally, with his busy list of duties for the day complete, this Candle Pug is ready for a well-deserved nap until it’s time to close up the studio.  A long day of hard work and candle making couldn’t have happened without his helpful paw.

The Antique Candle Works Candle Pug is so much fun!  I hope you love Waylon as much as we do!  Not every candle business has such an adorable mascot!

Want more behind the scenes in the candle studio?  Be the first to hear about everything going on (maybe even more about Waylon) by becoming an Antique Candle Works email friend

You can also stay up to date on Instagram and Pinterest!

Employee Spotlight: Tori

Employee Spotlight: Tori

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Tori.  I was born and raised in Lafayette, and I still love living here.  I also went to Purdue University where I got my degree in management with a concentration in marketing.

What is your job at Antique Candle Works?

I am the Assistant Operations Manager.  I run candle production, the Antique Candle Sale, and make sure we have all our raw materials for making the candles.  Basically, I help manage the overall picture and focus in the production area of the studio.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I really like to play croquet and euchre with my family, and I like to read crime/murder mystery novels.  I also have an Etsy shop called "Hills and Honey" where I make and sell wood signs, and design custom invitation cards.

Where is your favorite place to grab some grub?

Pepe's Mexican Restaurant!  I've been going there for my birthday for years.  One of my favorite things there are the beef enchiladas.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

I love Joshua 1:9, but I also love Isaiah 43:2 -

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?

I LOVE The Office!  I've seen the whole show probably 10 times; it is a classic.  The only person I know that doesn't like it is Emily, haha!  For my favorite movie, I'd have to say Forrest Gump.

What is something that most people don't know about you?

I have an actual coffee addiction.  I love the cold brews at Starbucks, and my dad makes really good cappuccinos at home.  I love anything like that with caffeine, and it's almost becoming a bit of a problem!

You are happiest when...

I'm just relaxing with my family and Jack (my boyfriend).  Reading with a cup of coffee is always great, too.

What part of working at Antique Candle Works do you enjoy the most?

Probably the Antique Candle Sale itself.  I love working with all the antiques and reusing them for candles.  It is so cool because every single piece has a story from whoever it used to belong to, and we are passing it on for someone else to enjoy. (If I don't steal them first!)

Do you have any life goals?

Yes!  Long term, it would be to have my own sign shop or graphic design based business.  I also have always seen myself having a big family, so that would be ideal, too.

Have you learned anything from working at Antique Candle Works?

The biggest thing I've learned is actually realizing how shopping small or local really does make a huge difference to each of us in the studio.  I've also been able to see how a small business impacts so many people's lives, not just those behind the business.

What is your favorite fragrance at Antique Candle Works?

It depends on the season for me, but Clean Cotton is one of my top favorites year-round.  Cashmere is a go-to in the cozier months, and Fall Harvest is probably my new favorite fall scent!

What is your favorite thing about Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana?

It's just home.  I've been here my whole life, so I know a lot about it.  There's a good mix of city and country living, too.  It can be quaint and quiet, or just the opposite with Purdue, so the whole area just as a good balance.  Like I said, it's home!

Employee Spotlight: Emily

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Emily, and I was born and raised here in Lafayette.  I studied at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana where I was an elementary education major and earned my teaching license.  I currently am a nanny and have been the children’s ministry director at my church for the past 8 months.

What is your job at Antique Candle Works?

I am a Candle Maker.  I am mostly involved in the production of our candles: pouring wax, adding fragrances, setting up jars, things like that.  I do the early steps of the candle making process.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I really enjoy spending time with my niece and nephew.  We have so much fun together and love going to the zoo!  I also like to bowl and bike trails.  I don’t really have too much free time right now, though!

What is your favorite place to grab some grub?

McAlister's!  I love them.  For a while I went there every Friday and got the grilled chicken sandwich and tortilla soup.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Joshua 1:9 - "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

What is your favorite TV show or movie?

For a TV show, that would have to be The Golden Girls.  I’ve seen every episode probably 3 times.  When I was younger, I used to watch it all the time with my grandmother.  For my favorite movie: Disney's Beauty and the Beast.  I grew up with the animated version, but I enjoy the new live action one, too.  My niece and I dressed up in Belle’s outfits to go see it!

What is something that most people don't know about you?

I'm not sure.  Most people think I’m quiet if they don’t know me very well, but I actually love to talk.  I’m an open book!  I also kinda know how to play the accordion, so that's something.

You are happiest when...

I'm spending time with my niece and nephew at the zoo.  I love the zoo and going with them!

What part of working at Antique Candle Works do you enjoy the most?

I really like refilling the fragrance bottles.  It’s soothing and satisfying to have them all be full.  But I also like pouring the candles, too.

Do you have any life goals?

Not really.  Just to be the best that I can be.  I’m kind of a perfectionist, so I don’t like feeling like I didn’t do my best.

Have you learned anything from working at Antique Candle Works?

Daily, how to keep my mind on the goal and staying focused on that while interacting with the team.  Everyone here is so encouraging, which isn’t always my nature, so I can challenge myself to be more encouraging!

What is your favorite fragrance at Antique Candle Works?

Wildflowers.  It really smells like lying in a field of flowers on a sunny day.  It also kind of reminds me of the smell of a marshy area that was between our home and an elementary school when I was a kid.

What is your favorite thing about Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana?

It feels like home.  I grew up here, know my way around, and know all of the local haunts.  Some of my favorite places are Columbian Park and Arrow Head bowling.  My whole family bowls, so we love going there and having fun together!

Employee Spotlight: Brittany

Employee Spotlight: Brittany

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Brittany and I live in my hometown of Lafayette, Indiana. I'm a recovering sinner and Jesus follower. I am a wife to a guy that moved to Indiana for school (from Colorado) and now calls Indiana his home. We adopted a Pug dog named Waylon 5 years ago who hangs out with us at the candle studio most days. I spend most of the week making candles with a fun team of lady friends!

What is your job at Antique Candle Works?

I do a lot of fun things at work - I am the founder of Antique Candle Works. I remember writing the business plan for this business in January 2014 on our dining room table. I make candles, ship orders, interact with our friends (customers) on social media, and hang out with my work buddies all day. I'm also in charge of our Fun Friday activity every week. This usually includes something like "Wicking Wars" where we compete to pre-wick the mason jar candles. Whoever is fastest gets something amazing—like a new Yeti!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I LOVE to spend time with my church family and worshiping with them every Sunday. I also love to watch my favorite TV shows like The Walking Dead, Law & Order: SVU, Grey's Anatomy, Outlander and The Profit; haha (there's more, but I don't want to look too crazy). I also enjoy vacationing with my husband regularly. My favorite places we've visited are Las Vegas and the Appalachian Mountains.

What is your favorite place to grab some grub?

Sharma's Kitchen in Lafayette, IN. It’s the BEST Indian food, hand down. I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants all over the US and they have the most expansive buffet selection.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Romans 1:16 - I love this verse because it's a reminder to myself to be bold and unapologetic about the gospel. The fact that Jesus decided to leave the throne of heaven and enter the world and knowing he was going to have to carry the burden of my sin is true love to me.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is Interstellar. This movie is so powerful - I've never ugly cried so hard in a public movie theatre. Haha!

What is something that most people don't know about you?

While I was a student at Purdue, one of my side hustles was radio and TV advertising. I voiced multiple radio commercials for Plato's Closet and did TV commercials for University Bookstore.

You are happiest when...

I am laughing so hard it hurts - usually from watching Impractical Jokers. I love a good prank.

What part of working at Antique Candle Works do you enjoy the most?

When I look around and everyone at work is joking and having a good time (and yes - we work while doing this!). We arrive at work to accomplish tasks, but I find a lot of joy knowing that people want to be here and are invested in each other's relationships.

Do you have any life goals?

I want to be in tune with the Spirit and His leading. I want to live a radical life - knowing that I was a good and faithful servant to the Lord. I also want to create fun and excitement in the sometimes mundane parts of life (like work!).

Have you learned anything from building and working at Antique Candle Works?

That a small business can be successful and offer a good living for more than one person. I've also learned that we can create a company culture that is honoring to God. I just love that!

What is your favorite fragrance at Antique Candle Works?

Cashmere - If you haven't tried this candle, you must! I think if more folks could smell this candle in person, they would buy it!

What is your favorite thing about Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana?

Purdue University. It was a privilege to be a student for four years and I grew up a lot professionally. I love visiting campus - it reminds me of the days where I met my husband. The Neon Cactus is a fun place too - it doesn't have the best reputation, but it's a one-of-a-kind place to visit in Lafayette!
